A BARRY community garden held an open day to celebrate the hard work and dedication of its volunteers on Saturday, June 10.

The Newydd Housing Association-managed garden gave visitors the opportunity to look around and enjoy some fresh produce.

Volunteers were also presented with certificates for transforming the garden over the last three years from a disused piece of grassland into a place for the community to enjoy.

Garden volunteer, Morgan Dickens, a volunteer at the garden said: “I love helping out. I’ve been helping at the garden for over a year doing lots of things, from digging, to watering to helping build the pond.”

Peter Smith, who also helps out at the garden, said: “I have been volunteering at the garden for over a year and I absolutely love it. I do various things such as strimming the grass, digging, looking after the pond and building sheds. When I heard about this volunteering opportunity from Glamorgan Voluntary Services I thought I’d give it a go. Rain or shine, I’m always down here helping out.”

Lisa Williams, Garden manager, Lisa Williams said: “It was lovely to see so many of our volunteers at the open day to receive their certificates. It's always a pleasure to show our appreciation for all the time and hard work they put in to keep this amazing project going.”
