A CONSUMER watchdog is recalling Bounce Energy Balls which may contain bacteria linked to meningitis.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA), has identified the Cashew and Pecan Vitality Lift and the Apple and Cinnamon Protein Punch as containing listeria causing bacteria.

Responding to the news, Liz Brown, CEO at Meningitis Now said: “Listeria is a rare cause of meningitis. It can be contracted from eating contaminated foodstuffs, such as unpasteurised soft cheeses, pate and shellfish. In most people, listeria is a mild infection with fever, diarrhoea and vomiting lasting few days.

“In rare cases, listeria infection can be more severe and cause meningitis. Those most at risk of severe infection include pregnant women and their unborn child, young babies, people over 65 years old and those with a weakened immune system.

“Like all cases of meningitis, I would advise people to ensure they know the signs and symptoms of meningitis and to seek immediate medical attention should they see or experience a combination of them. Acting quickly can prevent deaths and significantly improve patient outcomes”.

The bacteria which comes from sunflower kernels, is an ingredient in the high-protein energy snacks popular with health and fitness enthusiasts.
