AN award for excellence in mathematics has been created in the name of former Ysgol Bro Morgannwg pupil Rhodri Miller, who died in a car accident in March 2015.

Seventeen-year-old Rhodri excelled in maths during his time as an a-level student at the Barry school so mum Joanne Miller-Binding said it was fitting the the award created in his name be handed out for excellence in the field.

Rhodri died in the same car accident which killed his girlfriend Alesha O'Connor and friend Corey Price. Ysgol Bro Morgannwg now also has a memorial bench to Rhodri and Corey who were both pupils at the school.

Mrs Miller-Binding said: "Rhodri is sadly no longer with us, he was an A* maths student studying towards his A-levels, therefore we felt it quite fitting to have a trophy awarded in his memory in this subject, it’s the first of its kind at Ysgol Bro Morgannwg.

"Mathematics is often a subject overlooked when an award is given out, however in its own right it is a very complex subject to study and achieve good grades."

The award was handed over to Year 13 student Rhys Lloyd by Rhodri's younger brother Iestyn along with a prize of £250 from Rhodri's parents and patrons of the King William IV pub in Barry.

When asked about his achievement Rhys said: "I got a mark of 299 out of 300, but I know Rhodri would have gone that extra mile and got that extra mark."

Rhodri’s family said they would like to thank Ysgol Bro Morgannwg for their support in creating the trophy allowing the trophy which will be presented each year in memory of their son.

Mrs Miller-Binding said: "We also would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who donated money across the bar at the King William IV, which raised £1,500 for the Church of St Cadoc.

"And also a massive thank you to friends, family, customers, businesses and everyone else who attended and donated towards the memorial football match held, which allowed for a memorial bench to be sited outside the reception of Ysgol Bro Morgannwg."
