THE VALE of Glamorgan Council has approved a new rental policy for the Barry Island beach huts.

A report came before cabinet on Monday, April 25 having been referred back to them by the scrutiny committee for economy and environment.

One of the main areas of concern raised was allowing officers to have flexibility with booking arrangements.

But the new policy delegates responsibilities o make changes to booking arrangements if need.

Keys and booking administration will be run in partnership with local businesses on Barry Island.

They also approved to let empty beach huts out, free of charge, for regeneration and tourism activities.

Following research into the costs of beach huts across the UK, the suggested charges are £10 peak/£5 off peak for a small hut and £20 peak/£10 off peak

Annual booking charges for the first year would run from June 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017 and be £416 for a large hut and £291 for a small hut.

Each year thereafter, from April 1 to March 31, they would be £500 for a large hut and £350 for a small hut.

Up to six smaller and larger huts will offered longer term on an annual basis to ensure out of season use and guarantee full year bookings for the huts.

Cllr Gwyn John, member for visible services and leisure said that this had been a worthwhile operation.

He said: "The scrutiny committee have endorsed the new policy and praised its contents.

Cllr Burnett agreed and said: "Now that the policy is more flexible, we are able to change things on the ground if needed."

It was agreed that bookings could be made online, over the phone, through Contact One Vale or through an app which is to be launched shortly.

A further report will be brought forward following the conclusion of the 2016/2017 summer season.
