A DISABLED Barry teenager with a mission to volunteer in Africa, has successfully raised the funds he needs to help children with HIV and AIDS.

Charlie Anning-Phillips, 19, will also assist children with learning disabilities in his role as a Disability Teen Scheme peer facilitator, thanks to money raised through various events, including an over 50’s social and bingo afternoon held at the IT Matters building in his local Gibbonsdown area.

All the money raised on the night went towards Charlie’s fund to go to Africa for two weeks later this month as a volunteer for Mencap to work with children with learning disabilities, HIV and AIDS.

All Youth Matters manager, Tracey Downes said: “Charlie is a very hard working and deserving young man who always puts the needs of others first. This new venture shows Charlie’s caring nature in volunteering to help the children who will benefit enormously from Charlie’s experience and warm spirit.”

Charlie, who is registered disabled and has volunteered with All Youth Matters (AYM) - has been with Disability Teenscheme for the past five years.

The scheme is a provision funded by Families First for young people in the Vale with disabilities to socialise and participate in fun activities in a safe environment.

AYM run two Teen Scheme days every week through the school holidays and young people benefit from organised trips both locally and further afield.

It also works in partnership with other organisations such as World at Play, Motion Control, Youth Cymru, Follow Your Dreams and local emergency services.

They put on their own version of a Cinderella pantomime, last summer, and performed it for their friends and families at the disco and bingo event hosted by the young people on the last day of the Summer Teenscheme.

Ms Downes added: "Charlie played Prince Charming and also helped out with refreshments and raffle ticket sales.

"He is a key member of the volunteers and participates in making each day fun-filled for all the young people and supports them with their needs."
