A SPECIAL railway train proved a first when it was just the ticket for a first 21st century of its kind.

The 11-coach stock passed over the Barry Island railway station’s viaduct before arriving on at 11am at Saturday, August 22 – following a 20-year wait.

The heritage Class 66 locomotive train stopped off on the platform – while more than 400 railway enthusiasts enjoyed a day out – before departing for Barry town and London Paddington at 4.38pm.

Volunteer Mike Baker said: “History was made on the weekend as the first rail tour to Barry Island of the 21st century was successfully completed.

“The hundreds of rail enthusiasts enjoyed a great day out on the Island and were blessed with dry weather despite the ominous predictions of a weekend washout. Everyone concerned agreed that it was a fabulous event for the Island and are looking forward to the next rail excursion.”

The return has been made possible thanks to the restoration of the second railway track.

It was part of the Barry Tourist Railway's Plan to bring more visitors to Barry and enhance facilities to deal with such extra services including extending the platform.
