STAUNCH Barry Town supporter and local councillor Ian Johnson is one of the football fans who has been interviewed for S4C documentary Stori Pel-Droed Cymru, the story of Welsh football.

Makers of the six-part series, due to begin broadcasting in October to coincide with the Welsh team's final qualifying matches for the 2016 European Championship, asked Ian about his time writing a Barry Town fanzine in the 1990s, about organising the supporters bus for Barry's visit to Porto and how Barry turning professional in 1995 changed Welsh domestic football.

Plaid Cymru councillor Ian was also asked to give his thoughts on Barry Town’s Welsh and European success in the 1990s and their recent phoenix-like revival, as well as Welsh football’s challenges through recent decades.

Speaking after filming the interview, Ian Johnson, who is now President of Cadoxton Barry FC as well as following Barry Town United and other local clubs, said: “This is for a six-part series about football in Wales, the story of Welsh football, so they are interviewing fans, like me, as well as players, officials, journalists and others with a different perspective on Welsh football.

“They asked me about watching the Welsh national team, the prospect of a single UK team - which I oppose - and my favourite Welsh goals and games.

“The final question was the most tricky as I had to name an all-time Wales first 11, where I managed to get in former Barry Town manager Peter Nicholas, who got more than 70 Welsh caps, as well as the usual favourites such as Gareth Bale and Ian Rush.

“I’m sure much of my contribution will end up on the cutting room floor, but I’m looking forward to the series appearing on S4C in the Autumn."
