CROWDS flocked to the annual Vale of Glamorgan Show at Fonmon Castle on Wednesday (August 12) taking advantage of the good weather.

Vale MP Alun Cairns said: “The Vale Show was blessed with fantastic weather, and such a well organised event really brings all communities in the Vale of Glamorgan together.”

And Plaid Vale and Barry town councillor Ian Johnson used the occasion to call for has called for support for Vale dairy farms after meeting with National Farmers Union officials and local farmers at the event.

Cllr Johnson was told by the NFU that there had been a global drop in milk and cheese prices in the past year which left many farms unsustainable across Wales.

He said: “There has been a 30 per cent drop in the price for milk paid by supermarkets to producers in the past year and cheese processors are being paid around £1,000 per tonne less than 12 months ago, but consumers are still paying the same price.

“This should be an issue for the Groceries Adjudicator, which Plaid believes should have greater powers to intervene when the market is being unfair on both farmers and shoppers.

“Where products can be sourced locally, we should look to do that for several reasons.

“Firstly, so that we know what is going on our plates and in our drinks and can trust our food safety agencies to do their job properly.

“Secondly to ensure that we will still have a farming industry in the future and ensure we have food security.

“And finally so that we can reduce carbon emissions through food transport.

“Better local procurement from Welsh Government, local councils and other public bodies – all paying a fair price - has a big role to play in securing the future of the industry.”
