TWO enterprising Barry men are setting up the town's very first over 30's bar, in a bid to "bring the nightlife back" for the older crowd.

Michael Ruckley and Scott Walters are converting the old Railway Club on Broad Street into a split level venue with an over 30's bar upstairs and an over 21's nightclub downstairs.

Michael, 27, said that as well as saving one of Barry's old clubs from being turned into flats or a shop, the pair wanted to give older people a nice place to go on a night out in Barry.

"The vast majority of over 30's feel ancient when they go for a night out in Barry," he said, "That doesn't seem right.

"To me 30 is still young, you shouldn't go out and feel old.

"They're building all these houses in Barry, bringing people in - but there's nowhere for them to go here."

Between them Michael and Scott have a huge amount of experience of promoting nightclubs and bars, with Scott having worked the doors of most Barry venues at some stage.

Scott, 33, said that Barcocoa - the upstairs bar - and Cocoa - the nightclub - will both aim to keep troublemakers away and provide people in Barry with somewhere to enjoy a nice atmosphere. There will also be a shirt and shoes dress code.

The pair have set up a Facebook page for the venture and have already received a huge response to their plans.

"It's been amazing," Michael said. "We've had people messaging us from Llantwit Major and Cowbridge saying they won't have to go to Cardiff for a night out, they can come to Barry now."

The new bar will still have a Skittle Alley, and is seeking people interested in playing.

They thanked Darren Sheppard, Adrian Lewis and Gareth Howlett for help with the project so far.

They hope that BarCocoa will be open in around two months time with Cocoa following in an additional two months.
