PLANS for the former Barry Conservative Club to be demolished to make way for 21 apartments are set to be approved next week.

A report going before the Vale of Glamorgan council's planning committee on Thursday, July 2 recommends granting permission for the 15 one bedroom and six two bedroom flats. There would also be 15 parking spaces created on the Station Street site.

The Conservative club closed its doors in September 2013 after seeing a decline in customers.

The report notes that 16 letters of objection have been received from nearby neighbours regarding the development.

These complaints include concerns about insufficient parking on the street, the building design being "out of character" with the rest of the street and the "overbearing" building creating a lack of sunlight and privacy for existing properties.

The report states: "While there would be a degree of inter-visibility between the new units and the terrace of properties opposite, it is considered that the distance and relationship is not so close that it would unacceptably impact upon privacy.

"It is also considered that the distance is sufficient to ensure that the building would not appear as unacceptably overbearing or unneighbourly."

The report also acknowledges that the development would increase the "numbers of comings and goings through the site", but says that "the parking spaces would not be sited directly against the rear boundaries of any gardens" and it is considered that "the vehicle and pedestrian movements associated with the development would not demonstrably harm residential amenity in terms of noise or nuisance".

The report concludes that, pending certain planning obligations, permission be granted to the project which will be carried out by Cardiff's Green Maple Projects and Hafod Housing Association.
