He said: “You aren’t able to say anything and you also wonder whether your name is actually going to appear on the list when it is eventually published.

“When it finally was confirmed my feeling was one of relief that I could actually tell some people but also a feeling of significant pride for me and for my family and friends.

“I think I’ve been honoured for my part in what was a fantastic team effort at Glasgow 2014 but it is also in recognition of everyone’s role in that wider team effort so I was grateful that I could accept this fantastic honour on their behalf.

“It’s quite a humbling experience but when you see the joy and delight it has brought to my family and friends I can’t help but think that it’s a fantastic moment in my life.”

He added: As an avid sports fan, on a personal level I was also delighted to see my name in the same list as Sir Gareth Edwards, Jonathan Davies and Huw Jenkins.

"My mother and father would’ve been so proud and I hope all their friends in Barry take some delight from this news.”

Brian has also been involved with Sport Wales, now as director of elite performance.
