‘NEAP’ tides have caused a delay in work being carried out at the Barry community water activities centre, but constructors say they are still confident work is on schedule.

Local firm GRABit has constructed the new roadway, hardstanding for boats containers and temporary facilities over the last month or so and now ground works are complete, with the only outstanding works, the construction of the slipway.

The scheme has been difficult to programme as work needs to be carried out when the 14 day cycle of tides in the Bristol Channel are neap tides, that is at their lowest range, and when there is no shipping using the docks.

Coupled with this the dock has to be partly drained of millions of gallons of water to allow the concrete slipway to be laid.

Associated British Ports and its staff have been very helpful, but there is further delay on the next neap tides which will occur because a ship has been re-scheduled to enter the dock just at the most awkward time to complete the works.

Managing director of Messrs Grabit, Byron Lewis said he was hopeful that no ship will again be suddenly scheduled to coincide with the next neap tides, so they will be able to handover the slipway in time for an official opening on June 20.
