BARRY Island fairground operators have issued a potential traffic delay alert as five trailers bearing its latest big ride arrive tomorrow, Thursday, April 20.

The Danter family, who took hold of the keys to the iconic seaside site in late March for a Good Friday opening, will welcome a Magic Mouse family-suitable rollercoaster from Kirkcaldy, in Scotland, for a temporary stay in Barry for the May bank holiday season.

The 120ft long x 60ft wide ‘coaster, having already been booked before the Danters knew that the Pleasure Park deal would finally go through following wranglings between Vale Council planners and Barry Island Property Company (BIPC), will then temporarily leave for use at Newcastle Town Moor, before it is hoped making a permanent return.

Meanwhile, demolition of the Log Flume is continuing and new rides entering onto the site.

Attractions established since the initial opening day include frog and ladybird rides and a fun house.

Pleasure park managing director, James Danter said: “The rollercoaster is coming in on five trailers. There may well be a blockage at the gate.”

“We’ve got more rides to come in and we are going to open the car park when the Log Flume is clear. We’ve got a traditional carousel coming in, but at the moment nowhere to put it. Big things are happening.”

He added: “The response has been very good and we are relying on the weather. The public and the local businesses have been to see us and they are very happy.”

Just Pennies, the Friars Road/Paget Road –fronted amusement arcade facing the sea, is also in the process of being demolished to make way for a temporary use until the end of the summer season.

Work will then begin on the permanent design building set to include a more open-plan look with fountain features.

Local businesses said they had witnessed an increase in visitor numbers since the fairground opened up.

Promenade Bar owner, John Zeraschi, whose has traded on the Island for more than 50 years, said: “I said I’d believe it when I see it. Now I am beginning to believe it. I wish Mr Danter and his family all the luck.”
