AN INNOVATIVE recruitment campaign calling on Vale men to discover song via a beer and nibbles night saw 20 men rally to the cause.

The would-be choristers saw the men, from Barry, Rhoose, Dinas Powys Wenvoe, Penarth, and Llantwit Major, put in a first appearance at Barry’s West End Club at a taster session encouraging them to give singing a go.

Barry Male Voice Choir, musical director Dorothy Connell and accompanist Emma Arscott, led the guests through a varied programme of songs as an introduction to male voice singing.

The existing members hoped the stirring sounds of the combined voices of choristers and guests singing in near harmony was enjoyed by all and suggested the choir could soon expect a number of new members.

The follow up session on Monday, November 17, so 18 potential recruits make their first encore.

Choir president, Gordon Mudford said: "Barry Male Voice Choir enriches the lives of many. I hope that the choir recruitment campaign has safeguarded the future of the choir and will allow the 112 year legacy of our predecessors to continue. The choir is committed to entertaining and supporting the organisations and charities of Barry and the Vale. Over the years we have raised thousands of pounds for good causes.

“We shall continue to do this. Our engaging and colourful recruiting campaign was made possible by the generous support of the Barry Town Council."

Men of all ages, interested in joining, can still get involved.

Taster sessions at the Trinity Hall, Trinity Street, Barry, run from 6.30pm until 7.15pm or at the choir rehearsals at the same venue on Mondays or Thursdays 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
