REVISED plans for a state-of-the-art, multi-million pound Barry primary school have gone on public display.

Families were invited to Oak Field primary, in Gibbonsdown, on Thursday, November 13 to view the scheme that will see building work on the two-storey premises begin on November 27.

The £2.75m one-form-entry school, on the same site, will replace the current building which will undergo a £160,000 revamp and see Oak Field’s next-door neighbour Welsh-medium primary Ysgol Gwaun y Nant occupy the space.

School supporters last year waged a successful campaign to halt Vale Council proposals to close Oak Field and direct Gibbonsdown schoolchildren to Palmerston and Jenner Park primaries.

Ysgol Gwaun y Nant will increase capacity to 420 – to satisfy demand - and Oak Field will retain its 210 pupil limit and nursery education will provide additional places.

Oak Field head teacher, Ian Williams said the enable the school to deliver 21st century education to Gibbonsdown.

He said: “It’s fantastic – a tremendous uplift. It’s nothing more than this community deserves. They fought long and hard to keep the school.”

Dad Steven Miller, whose son Ellis is a Year 3 pupil, said his son was already excited.

He said: “He talks about it all the time. He says, “I’m having a new school dad.” I think it’s great.”

The community facility will incorporate a lift, photo voltaic panels on the roof, touch screen and Apple TVs, new play facilities and also incorporate a wildlife area and parking provision.

Developers will work with staff and children as the build progresses.
