TWO of Barry's most revered amateur boxing clubs may be in danger of being lost, after the pub they train above was issued a notice of closure this week.

The Windsor, of Holton Road, Barry is being closed by owners SA Brains possibly as early as next week leaving both Barry East End and Barry West End Amateur boxing clubs homeless.

The clubs, who both go back decades in Barry, have been training above the Windsor since losing their homes in the Admiral Pub and Romilly School respectively, and were considering eventually fighting under the same banner.

Over the years the club has seen hundreds, if not thousands, of young boxers enter through their doors including both future world title contender Lee Selby and his 2012 Olympics bronze medallist brother Andrew.

Gerwyn Pugh, assistant coach at Barry East End ABC said that the club's main concern was finding somewhere to store its equipment, including a ring and bags, and eventually a new home.

He explained that the club could only really afford "peppercorn rent", an obvious obstacle in securing a new premises.

"It's not just a massive disruption, it could be the end of it all," he said.

Gerwyn, a former Barry RFC player and school PE teacher explained how vital the clubs are to Barry: "I see some of these kids and I think to have to teach them in school would be purgatory but we show them discipline, and show them that you don't have to be a 'gangster' or get aggressive on the streets to be recognised or acheive anything.

"Here they have real role models who can teach them something."

Peter Wilson, head of retail operations at Brains, said: “We have taken the decision to close the Windsor in Barry, which is currently in need of significant repair, giving us the time to review its future.

“It is anticipated that the pub will close in early November, although we are currently talking to the boxing club to agree a date."

If anyone can help store the club's equipment or provide training space they can email gerwynpugh@yahoo.com or contact the Barry and District News and we will forward your information.
