POLICE in the Vale of Glamorgan are working with shop owners to prevent the sale of eggs and flour to young people during the Halloween period.

Shops have the option to display special posters warning youngsters that they will not sell eggs or flour to them in the run up to Halloween.

Officers have already seen an increase in calls from the community reporting youngsters targeting homes with eggs and flour on the run up to Halloween.

Police are warning that the ‘trick’ of throwing eggs and flour at houses causes criminal damage and throwing them at people is harassment. Officers warn that they will take a firm approach to offenders.

Police Sergeant Nia Hughes said: “It might seem harmless fun, but anyone throwing eggs and flour on Hallowe'en or scaring others, could end up in a mess themselves.

“We don’t want to stop anyone having fun at this time of year, we hope that youngsters enjoy Halloween in a sensible way because it’s good for community spirit, but throwing eggs and flour will not be tolerated during the days leading up to Halloween or on the night."

Other posters issued by South Wales Police are available to home owners indicating they do not wish cold callers, as police appreciate that Halloween can be an anxious time for the elderly and those living on their own because of strangers knocking on doors.

PS Hughes confirmed: “Trick or Treaters are asked to respect this decision and not approach a home if a poster is displayed."

Anyone who would like to report any issues during Halloween is urged to call South Wales Police on 101.
