A WOUNDED bird is destined to see further action after a forklift truck driver turned hero and rode to ‘Steven Seagull’s' rescue.

The seagull, dubbed Steven after US movie star Steven Seagal, found himself stranded with a broken wing on the site of the former Barry magistrates court when driver Gavin Wood stepped up to the plate and became the saviour.

Jehu project services site manager, Nyron Wood asked site staff to work to humanely trap the bird and keep him safe until help arrived.

Gavin, demonstrating previously unknown skills in seabird entrapment, cornered the injured creature by the men’s toilets.

Construction opportunities coordinator at Jehu, Bernie Mark said: “A short skirmish ensued but the bird was no match for Gavin’s biceps - honed by years of front row forward play for Cambrian RFC - and soon Gav was taping up the outside of the cardboard box with Steven inside."

Staff desperately seeking a home for Steven discovered Newport-based Swan Rescue and two hours later Bernie took him down to the The Knap for the handover.

Bernie said: “Obviously Gavin was inconsolable. A photo of Steven went up on his notice board and a certificate was awarded for ‘Services to Seabirds.' We thought we’d seen the last of Steven. However, a few weeks later, to Gavin’s delight, the emails started to arrive with photos of Steven in recovery and updates regarding his progress until the site staff were informed that Steven had taken his first flight since injury.”

Nyron added: “It’s important that construction sites look after the needs of all in the local community, including those with wings and webbed feet.”
