CHILDREN at a Barry school were joined by an armed forces member to commemorate a special day which reinforced the message of children helping children.

Pupils at All Saints C/W primary adopted a red, white and blue theme for the day run jointly by ABF the Soldiers' Charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

These three charities each takes responsibility for the welfare of soldiers, sailors and airmen and their families and the youngsters and staff wanted to share the caring message within and outside the school community.

The first ever Red, White and Blue Day was held in October 2011, with 54,000 children from 175 schools taking part.

Engineering officer, captain John Voss, whose daughter attends All Saints C/W primary, said he had done tours in the Afghanistan, the Balkans, Cyprus, Iraq, Northern Ireland, and Sierra Leone and Red, White and Blue Day embraced core Christian values such as teamwork, respect, selflessness and compassion.

He said: “The same values are upheld in school.”

And he added the school had been a great source of support for the family with an understanding of his job and the family’s needs.

Year 5 class teacher, Elizabeth Sanders, said the day was designed to raise awareness of children in their families and reception teacher and art co-ordinator Emma Evans and LSA Rachel Robinson created an eye-catching red, white and blue display for the red, white and blue dressed pupils to savour as they embraced their caring sides.
