A BURGLAR who stole 57 bottles of alcohol, cheese and steaks from a Sully caravan park restaurant over three different nights has been jailed for 12 months.

Cardiff Crown Court heard how Paul Alan Morris, 33, had also burgled Poundstretcher in Barry Waterfront when he snuck in through a door left open by night staff and stole mobile phones, a wallet, cigarettes and a flask.

He pleaded guilty to both charges as well as further charges of using his now ex-girlfriend's black Ford Puma without her permission to carry out the offences, to driving without insurance and to being in possession of a small amount of amphetamine.

On Wednesday, October 1, Prosecutor John Probert told the court how Barry man Morris, who has convictions for 67 previous offences - many of which are for burgling houses - had broken in to the restaurant at The Spinney caravan park alone on two occasions on August 24, August 25 and with another intruder on August 27.

Food items such as cheese and steaks were stolen along with 57 bottles of spirits, wine and champagne, some of which he stored at his girlfriend's house without her knowledge.

Management at the caravan park noticed the missing stock and CCTV footage revealed that the restaurant had been burgled by intruders with concealed faces.

On August 28, Morris stole items from a staff area in Barry Poundstretcher, taking advantage of a door left open to allow access to a refuse area.

It was Morris's girlfriend who contacted the police the say she believed her car had been used in the commission of a crime.

Morris was arrested a day after the Poundstretcher burglary, heavily intoxicated and in possession of the keys to his girlfriend's car, which was parked nearby.

Only a small amount of the stolen items were recovered.

Morris was described in court as a man who has had problems with alcohol and amphetamines.

Recorder Robert Craven sentenced Morris to 12 months in prison, endorsed his driving licence with six points and ordered him to pay a £100 surcharge.

He said: "You abused the trust of your girlfriend and you have an unfortunately lengthy string of previous convictions."
