A DOORSTEP sport project has started in the Barry area with the aim of getting more young people, more active, more often in their own communities.

The project provides activity “on the doorstep” for young people aged eight to 18 who are generally not members of sports clubs but want to take part in sport.

Funded by Sport Wales, many activities have already started. At Iolo Park, Treharne on Mondays, activities run from 4.30pm to 5.15pm for eight to 11 year olds and from 5.30pm to 6.15pm for 12 and overs.

Thursdays at Belvedere Crescent see Futsal from 4.30pm to 5.30pm and multi-sports between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, and on Fridays at Alexander Gardens, sports activities run from 4.30pm to 5.30pm for children aged 10 and above.

Sessions are led by qualified leaders and assisted by volunteers recruited by the Vale Volunteer Bureau. Further sessions are planned to take place indoors during the autumn.

Any young people interested in attending sessions can just turn up and all sessions are currently free of charge.

Anyone requiring further information can contact Rachel Shepherd from the Vale Council Sports Development team on 07730 749485.

The project is being delivered by the Vale Council’s Sports Development team in partnership with Barry Communities First and other partners including Vale Volunteer Bureau, Elim Elevate and Newydd.
