A MAN who assaulted a toddler he was babysitting, leaving the child with a fractured arm and facial injuries, has been jailed for two and a half years.

At Cardiff Crown Court last month Jay Miller, 21, of Winston Road, Barry was found guilty of four charges of ABH and one charge of GBH on the little girl who was two years of age when the assaults took place.

Miller had taken the child for a walk on November 19 while the mother - who cannot be named for legal reasons - attended a hospital appointment.

When they returned home the girl had a bruise on her cheek.

Then just days later on November 22, multiple bruises appeared on the girl's face which Miller claimed at the time were caused when the girl fell into a wall.

Two days later on November 24 another incident saw the toddler end up in hospital with a fractured right arm, with x-rays revealing two further fractures believed to have been caused around 10 days previously.

Experts at Miller's trial said these injuries would have been caused by him pulling and twisting the arm. The bruising, experts told the court, would have been caused by him slapping and grabbing her face.

Miller denied causing any harm to the child but was found guilty by a jury who had heard how the man - who was serving a community order for an offence of criminal damage at the time of the assault - had trouble keeping his temper

Sentencing Miller to 30 months in prison Recorder Jonathan Furness said: "These are serious offences which have had a profound impact for the injured child.

"The long term consequences will never really be fully measurable."

Miller was also ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge.
