Warning over rogue gas engineers

First published in News by

TAKEAWAYS in Barry are receiving safety inspections following a spate of instances where unregistered gas engineers have carried out work.

Public Protection Officers from the Vale Council are currently carrying out gas safety visits to ensure that only trained gas engineers are used to carry out any necessary work.

Unregistered engineers in area have been carrying out work using false certificates.

Takeaways have been provided with information that will allow the owners to check the credentials of any gas engineer before they begin the work.

Registered businesses and engineers can be found on the Gas Safe website at www.gassaferegister.co.uk/.

Alternatively Gas Safe can be contacted via telephone on 0800 408 5500.

Work carried out by a non-registered engineer will not be recognised as being carried out by a competent person and both the gas engineer and the owner could be prosecuted.

The safety certificate provided would be null and void and it might transpire that your gas installation is not safe.

Before engaging anyone to carry out gas work, owners should check if the business is registered and check the engineers are qualified to carry out the type of work you require and qualified to work on the type of equipment you have.

Above all you should check the identity and qualifications of the engineer on arrival by looking at their Gas Safe Licence Card.
