THE Vale Council has announced a multi-million pound scheme to bring Barry Waterfront’s grade II Listed Hydraulic Pumphouse back into use.

Plans, which will be consulted on, propose 15 live/work units on a first floor, with the ground floor and basement areas converted into high quality commercial units such as restaurants.

The DS Properties scheme is anticipated to create an estimated 30 construction jobs and up to 65 operational jobs when fully completed.

A new paved and landscaped plaza will also be created providing outdoor seating areas alongside the restaurants.

The property, located near to rail, bus, cycling and pedestrian links, will also have onsite parking.

Vale Council leader, Cllr Neil Moore, said: “I am delighted DS Properties will be providing a bright future for this historic property.

“Urban regeneration is always very challenging, but the bold decision of the Council and Welsh Government to invest £1.4 million in the refurbishment of the building has helped save this important part of Barry’s heritage for the benefit of the wider community.”

The Hydraulic Pumphouse is a flagship regeneration project within the Innovation Quarter, a joint venture between the Vale Council and Welsh Government which has already seen the delivery of the Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre, West Quay Medical Centre, the Business Service Centre, the Skills Training Centre and Tourist Railway link.

Simon Baston, of DS Properties, said: “DS Properties are very proud to be selected by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Government to create an inspirational venue for people to live and work in and to ensure a sustainable future for this iconic building. It is totally unique and, subject to planning, will be preserved for generations to come.

“DS Properties are also committed to working with the Council to promote local regeneration benefits including sourcing local labour and materials whenever possible. Our scheme concept if approved for planning will bring the concept of live/work accommodation to this area for the first time. Live/work offers a sustainable and flexible use with the ability of a purchaser to manage their own business and use the unit as a residence.”

Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant, said: “I am delighted to hear this news. The partnership between Welsh Government and the Vale of Glamorgan has created this opportunity. The completed development will create an exciting venue for people who visit Barry and for the local community.”
