SOROPTIMIST International Barry and District raised £110 for the BIG Project (Birthing in the Gambia) by selling copies of a quiz based on countries of the World.
The winner was Lind Lloyd of Bryn Hafren School and she was presented with a hamper of Fair Trade goodies.
The BIG Project (Birthing in the Gambia) is a Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) Project in partnership with MCAI (Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International).
During their involvement with this project Soroptimists have raised over £100,000. This money has gone towards:
• Refurbishment and equipping of labour and maternity wards that were no longer fit for purpose
• The installation of a scanner
• Supply of emergency medicines
• Training courses for local healthcare staff in paediatric and neonatal resuscitation.
There is still a huge amount of work to be done to upgrade out of date health facilities, to fund equipment and provide training courses for local staff.
