PUPILS at a Barry secondary school made the television news when they swapped the classroom for a studio and quizzed the Vale MP.

St Richard Gwyn RC school pupils questioned Vale MP Alun Cairns in the Sky Newsroom as part of their day at the Sky Skills Studio.

The youngsters learned how to research, film, edit, present and broadcast a news item at the Sky Studios in West London.

They reported on the risks of bullying and cyber bullying and interviewed Mr Cairns or his views.

The school scheme allows participants to work with technology, including broadcast quality cameras, green screens and touch screen edit tables.

Alun said: “The pupils were so impressive. They had obviously researched the subject and put me to the test on what changes need to take place. It was a marvellous opportunity for pupils to not only learn about broadcasting technology but to use their skills from the classroom in a real life working environment.

“I am so pleased that they responded to my letter some months ago and it was a privilege to see St Richard Gwyn make their very own television report. The day showed how subjects like mathematics, English and science are so important.

“The bespoke lesson plans that are put together by Sky were very good and I know the pupils really enjoyed their day. I would encourage as many schools as possible to take advantage of this opportunity.”
