Take read from the borrowers

LOVERS of the printed word may be eligible to sign up for a service designed to deliver books to their home.
Senior citizens or the infirm can enjoy a good book read or a CD or cassette listen thanks to a team of Vale of Glamorgan Libraries volunteers who bring a specially selected bag of books to homes once a month and stopping for a chat.
Community outreach officer, Andrea Griffiths, said: “We have volunteers based at most of our libraries, visiting readers in all parts of the Vale, but we know there are many more people out there who would like to take advantage of the Home Library Service, but don’t know of its existence.”
Home Borrowers are often referred by concerned family and friends who live far away, or by neighbours, church members and health workers.
Andrea visits each one individually, before matching up home borrowers with their volunteers, to discuss their needs and reading or listening tastes.
“Home Borrowers have to satisfy certain criteria, such as living alone or with someone who also has mobility problems, or they have no regular visitor, family member or friend who can choose books for them,” said Andrea.
“Once it has been ascertained that they are eligible for the service they can look forward to regular visits from a friendly, sympathetic volunteer.”
Do you know someone who would benefit from this library service? Maybe you would yourself? If so, contact Andrea Griffiths on 01446 725381 or email ADGriffiths@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk to arrange a house visit.
The service is not available to individuals living in care homes, for whom separate arrangements are made.
Care Home managers are invited to contact Andrea regarding having regular deliveries of books.
The service is also currently looking for Home Borrowers in the Dinas Powys and Llantwit Major areas and seeking volunteers to cover the Cowbridge area.
