Porthkerry viaduct springs a leak

FOLLOWING the torrential rain and the St Jude storm that swept through Barry last week, it seems that Porthkerry viaduct has sprung a leak.
Photographs taken by Elizabeth Richards of Dinas Powys show the waterlogged area around the viaduct and also water spouting out from between the brickwork.
Elizabeth was taking part in an adult learner photography course when she noticed the water spraying out of the viaduct which is still used by an hourly passing train.
She said: "I saw it, and it didn't look right to me. It didn't look like it was supposed to be happening.
"If that was happening in your house you'd be worried about it. I wonder whether it is being maintained, of course this would only happen after torrential rain when its unlikely that any maintenance would be being carried out."
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said that the leaks were not cause for concern but they would be keeping a close eye on it.
She said: "Whilst the defect currently does not compromise the integrity of the structure and the safe operation of the railway, we will be monitoring the situation closely.
"We also plan to carry out a more detailed inspection to help inform us on the potential repair that is required to safeguard the viaduct in the long-term."
