All set for study into Barry’s Colcot Sports Centre

A COUNCIL committee has recommended options to improve facilities at Barry’s Colcot Sports Centre.

The economy and environment scrutiny committee on Tuesday recommended the Vale Council’s cabinet consider proposals for the future use and maintenance of the building.

Repairs needed, according to a survey, have been estimated at £450,000, with the main area of concern a requirement to replace the 40-year-old boiler and hot water system.

A disabled access survey in March 2004 also estimated that £80,000 was required to make the building DDA compliant.

The report put before councillors recommended a bid be submitted to the Barry Regeneration Partnership Project Development Fund for £20k in 2013/14 for a feasibility study to identify a range of possible future uses for the centre in consultation with the local community.

And, following a feasibility study, a steering group will be established, involving key stakeholders, to develop the most suitable proposals for the facilities for medium and long-term users.

It was also recommended that the Vale Council director of visible services and housing be authorised to undertake basic improvement works in 2013/14 to increase standards for existing users and protect the building from weather damage.

Chair of the Vale of Glamorgan Football League, Tony Williams, who spoke at the meeting, called for improvements.

He said: “It’s a good building. It’s designed to be built on and extensions can be built on there without knocking it down.

“At the moment the Colcot has got nothing.

A couple of years ago we had Barry Youth Club. The community needs the sports centre very badly.”
