Be part of Fairtrade plans for Barry

BARRY Town Council has passed a resolution supporting an application for Fairtrade Town status. Gibbonsdown member Rob Curtis has been tasked with co-ordinating the application process.

He is appealing for the support of local residents and businesses to volunteer their time by joining the Barry Town Fairtrade steering group, which will hold its first meeting on Monday, February 18 (4pm), at the Town Council offices on Gladstone Road.

Cllr Curtis said: "By eating, drinking or wearing products with the Fairtrade mark we are making a positive change to the lives of millions of farm workers and their families in developing countries.

"Poor market access and unfair trade rules often mean the price they get for their crop does not even cover the cost of production. They face the global challenges of food price rises and climate change.

"Under the Fairtrade scheme farmers and workers receive agreed stable and sustainable prices and an extra payment to invest in their community.

"As part of the agreement, farmer and worker groups must be democratically organised and meet environmental standards. These include careful use of chemicals, looking after soil and water sources and respecting nature."
