A BARRY school governor instrumental is establishing Welsh medium education in Gibbonsdown, Barry, has retired after 21 years of service.

Dafydd Treharne recently decided to retire as Ysgol Gymraeg Gwaun y Nant chairman of governors.

The school was initially based at Ysgol St Curig in 1996 before moving to the present Amroth Court site in 2001, with 80 pupils

The school now has 240 pupils.

New chairman of governors, Brennig Davies said Mr Treharne’s role in creating the very special ethos that exists at Gwaun y Nant was pivotal and that all pupils, parents, and staff were very grateful for his dedication and hard work over the years

Mr Treharne was presented with gifts at an assembly at school where the school choir also entertained.

He was presented with a rose bush which has been named Gwaun y Nant.

Head teacher Rhydian Lloyd, said he was always very grateful for Mr Treharne’s support.

Mr Lloyd said: "He always had pupils welfare at the forefront of his mind. He has played an instrumental role in the development of Welsh medium education in Barry."
