DURING February, the Duke of Edinburgh boys from Barry Comprehensive set out on a scenic walk in the wooden valley and limestone landscape along the waterfalls of the river Mellte.

Although the day started with torrential rain, the spirit amongst the 18 Year 10 students, led by Miss Rowe and accompanied by Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Hawkins and Mrs Davies, was high, and the weather gods soon rewarded the enthusiastic group with drier conditions.

The rain had made its mark on the forestry paths and the muddy trails made progress slow and laborious in places.

However, being both sensible and respectful of the conditions, the boys managed to visit three different spectacular waterfalls during the day’s walk.

The most impressive of these was probably the famous Sgwd Yr Eira which allows people to walk behind the cascading water.

For those boys who had been disciplined enough not to eat their lunch at the first morning stop, food was enjoyed at a clearing in the forest with a beautiful view of the south-western part of the Beacons.

Well done to everyone involved; it was a lovely and enjoyable day.
