THE Rotary Club of Barry have sponsored the winning team in the Area 4 Final of the Youth Speaks competition, one of several competitions organised by the Rotary movement specifically designed to develop students’ skills.

The Area 4 Final of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition was held on Monday, January 30, in Cardiff Golf Club and was hosted by the Rotary Club of Llanishen.

Winners in the senior section (14 to 18-year-olds) were the team from Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Barry, whose chosen topic was, Is modern education destructive?

Their team was chaired by Tirion Davies, their speaker was Nia Brown and their vote of thanks was given by Elin Alexander. Nia Brown also won the prize for best speaker.

Second place went to the team from Whitchurch High School sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast.

In line with national rules, all speakers had to answer a question from the audience to show their understanding of their chosen topic. Judges were Phil McCaffery and Ifor Morgan from Cardiff Speakers Club.

At the end of the evening the judges congratulated all participants saying that they had set some very high standards.

The next round of this competition is the District Final which will be held at Cowbridge Comprehensive School on Saturday, March 11.
