THE area final of the Rotary Young Musician 2017 competition was held at Whitchurch High School on Thursday, January 12, with students from Barry and Cardiff competing.

Two pupils from Ysgol Bro Morgannwg in Barry, Manon Ogwen Parry and Llinos Haf Jones, were judged the best in the vocal competition.

The winner was Manon, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Llandaff, who sang a piece by Mozart entitled Deh vieni non tardar and a lively piece by Tesori The girl in 14G.

Llinos Jones, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Barry, was runner-up singing O del mio dolore ardour by Gluck and a very lively piece by Martin Hamlisch entitled Nothing.

The judges, Enid Rosemary Davies and Rhian Owen, were impressed by both the vocal and acting talents of each of the competitors and hoped they would go on to make a career out of singing and acting.

Other competitors were James Bibey sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff East, Emily Hermon sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast, and Paul Monaghan sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff Bay.

Manon goes on to compete at the district final (South Wales) being held at Cardiff University School of Music on Saturday, March 4.
