BARRY-born weather presenter Derek Brockway provided sunny spells for local youngsters, as he gave a lesson at his former school this week.

Derek, who attended the old Barry Boys’ Park Crescent site at Romilly School, returned on Monday (October 8) to give a lesson to Year 3 pupils about the weather.

Youngsters asked a range of questions, as they began to study the weather as part of their curriculum.

Derek, who also attended Holton Primary, said he hoped his question and answer session and mock forecast would inspire the youngsters.

"If I could inspire one person to be a weather forecaster, that would be great," he said.

"I used to watch the forecast on TV when I was younger, and that’s what made me think it was what I wanted to do when I left school."

And he said he was impressed with the questions asked by the Barry youngsters, which ranged from how clouds, rainbows and tornados are formed, to when was the first hurricane, and would it snow for Christmas. Year 3 teacher Angharad Patterson welcomed Derek back to the school, following a previous visit last year.

"It’s always a delight to see him, as he is so entertaining and informative," she said.

"It’s lovely to have Derek in here as he’s Barry born, and the kids were really looking forward to seeing him."
