SPECIAL needs schoolchildren and staff enjoyed a day at Barry Island at a 40th anniversary party hosted by the Variety Club of Wales on Friday (September 14).
More than 1000 youngsters from schools across South Wales - including Ysgol Maes Dyfan in Barry and Erw'r Delyn in Penarth - took part in the annual sandcastle building contest; engaged in fairground fun provided by Vernon Studt and Pat Collins; and tucked into traditional seaside grub courtesy of Barry Island traders including Marco's Cafe, and Boofy's and O'Sheas chippies.
Juggler Dan The Hat and clown Mr Tricks also kept the pupils amused.
The annual day out has run for 40 years since it was established by Pat Collins and Langdon Doidge, husband of current Variety Club of Wales co-chair Peggy.
Variety At Work officer Sue Frampton - who organised the event - said children also had the opportunity to try out sports following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and appealed for any schools with special needs or underprivileged children to contact them to get involved.
