Vale Council launches new campaign to tackle potholes

THE Vale Council has launched a new campaign to deal with potholes - called The Big Fill - and they want your help.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, the council's highways maintenance team and contractor will be in the Dyfan ward area of Barry, launching the 12-month campaign to improve public roads across the Vale.

The team will then be fixing potholes in a different ward on various weekends from October, until each ward has been visited.

But first, they need your help, and The BIG Fill campaign is asking residents in every ward to tell the team about a pothole in their area.

* If you've spotted a pothole and want it fixed, check The BIG Fill's weekend schedule to see when they'll be visiting that area. (If you see a pothole circled in white, it has already been reported). You can find the schedule in local newspapers, on Twitter @VOGCouncil or on the council's website: www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk

* Phone the council on 01446 700 111 and tell them you're reporting a pothole under The BIG Fill campaign. You can also email thebigfill@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk or use the interactive map on the website www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk

* For the Dyfan ward work, the team want to hear from you between Monday, September 24 and Friday, September 28. Look out for dates of other ward areas as and when they are published.

Potholes reported under The BIG Fill campaign will be marked in white. Any outstanding potholes will be added to the team's weekday schedule or included in the council's three-year road resurfacing plan.

The Council's Operational Manager for Highways and Engineering, Andrew Loosemore, said: "In the recent public opinion survey, some people said they were fed up with the state of the Vale's roads.

"We listened - and now we're launching The BIG Fill to do even more to tackle potholes across the county.

"Our highways teams already work on the roads from Monday to Friday. But now we are specifically targeting potholes in every ward on weekends and everyone has an opportunity to take part by reporting any potholes to us.

"Check our weekend schedule to see which ward we'll be visiting that weekend, then phone us or go online to tell us about a pothole in that area.

"There's no need to call if you see white or yellow paint markings around the pothole, as this shows it is on our 'to do' list," he added.

"During The BIG Fill campaign we are hoping to make a substantial improvement to the roads by specifically targeting areas - so next time you find a pothole, let the team know and we'll fix it as soon as we can."
