CONSTRUCTION of a new "extra-care" housing facility is set to begin when the demolition of Barry's last remaining cinema ends next month (August 8).
Work has begun to tear down the 100-year-old cinema, The Theatre Royal, which closed in 2008 - despite a public campaign the retain the venue.
The £4m care home, run by Hafod Care, will aim to provide supported independent living for people 55 and over.
A new cinema has been proposed for the Barry Island Pleasure Park site as part of a residential, retail and entertainment complex.
