THE Vale of Glamorgan Council’s bid to create a recreational community amenity at Cemetery Approach is a very welcome initiative.

It is line with the wishes of the vast majority of Barry people, because 11,300 of them signed a petition three years ago to prevent housing development despoiling this lovely avenue, an open space gifted to the town by the British government in 1954.

Recent letters to the Barry & District News suggest political opportunism is behind the council’s initiative and the Labour Party’s about turn.

Well, we all know local elections are around the corner and the instinct for self-preservation is keenest when politicians seek our support.

However, that does not alter the fact this could become a landmark project in terms of a partnership between the council, local people and other interested parties.

A successful scheme would bring great kudos to the Vale council as exemplars of community partnership.

Funding and the willingness to give local people a direct say in the future of Cemetery Approach are the key factors.

The council is undertaking a consultation exercise asking the public for their views and ideas.

That consultation must be genuine and transparent, not just a box-ticking charade.

The people of Barry can make a real contribution by writing, phoning or going online. Make your contribution count.
