RESIDENTS in the Vale look set to benefit from a major change to the council’s kerbside recycling service.

On July 5, the council’s Cabinet confirmed its support for the adoption of a co-mingled (mixed) method of collection for householders’ dry recycling.

The proposed new service would also see the bulk of recycling collected every week, meaning householders would no longer need to store recycling for more than a week.

The council hopes this will encourage residents to recycle even more.

The move will apply to all 56,000 households in the Vale and applies to items such as paper, glass, cans, card and plastics. A ‘co-mingled’ collection of these items will mean they can all be placed in one container together.

The recycling service may also extend to new materials, such as textiles, in the future.

The Cabinet decision will now be considered by the council’s economy and environment scrutiny committee, and again by Cabinet later this month. If all parties agree, co-mingled dry recycling collections will begin in September 2011.

There will be no changes to the way in which other recycling services operate – garden, kitchen waste recycling and black bag refuse collections will all remain the same.

There may be date changes for some residents, and calendar information will be sent out following the final decision later this month.
