A MURDER investigation has been launched following the death of a 43-year-old Barry man.

David Jones who lived locally died at the University of Wales Hopsital in Cardiff on Wednesday after being assaulted at Liddicoate Court, Harvey Street, Cadoxton, on Saturday evening around 9.45pm.

A murder investigation has now been launched headed by detective chief inspector Stuart McKenzie and an incident room has been set up at Penarth police station where a team of detectives are working on the case.

Thirty-four-year-old Michael Patrick Stone of Liddicoate Court appeared at Barry Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning charged with Mr Jones' attempted murder. He is currently being remanded in custody and is due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday, June 27.

According to DCI McKenzie it appeared that a fight had broken out between the two men who were known to each other.

He said: "A Home Office post mortem is taking place today (Thursday) following which I will be liasing with the Crown Prosecution Service in respect of preferring a charge of murder.

"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and are appealing to anyone who was in Liddicoate Court or the Harvey Street area around 9.45pm on Saturday, June 10 to come forward.

"We also need to trace a man who spoke to the victim as he fled the scene of the incident near the flats complex. It is vital this person comes forward to tell us what he saw."

DCI McKenzie added he would like to thank residents who were inconvenienced during the forensic examination of the scene for their co-operation.
