BARRY vet Maurice Kirk has told how he is determined to fight on after a disciplinary hearing ruled he should not be allowed to practice any more.

The man described by many as 'a large and controversial personality' is appealing against the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) decision to strike him off the register.

And while he is fighting his battle to be reinstated, his wife Kirstie, 42, will work in both the Barry and Llantwit practices.

Mr Kirk is allowed to continue working as a vet until his appeal is heard, probably next year. He will work part time alongside Kirstie, who is leaving her role as veterinary advisor to the Welsh Assembly to help her husband.

According to Mr Kirk, 57, of The Marlpits, St Donat's, the conclusion reached by the RCVS raises serious issues for dedicated vets.

"I was shocked and disappointed to find why I was at the hearing.

"The incident in question was when I attended an emergency call in January 2001 at Cold Knap beach. Despite being in the bath after performing surgery on a cow in a field when the call came in, I responded in record time. But because I wouldn't discuss with a member of public what would happen to the injured animal, I was described as abusive.

"This calls into question the concept of confidentiality. Many colleagues have supported me in this matter. I also deny claims I smelled of alcohol. On the many occasions I have been pulled over, I tested negative for alcohol. I have my opinions on this matter, but as far as the RCVS decision is concerned, I am appealing."

His wife said: "This has been a very stressful time for Maurice. He is always on call, over the last three years, he worked six days full days a week.

"The support we've had from clients is wonderful. We have appreciated people saying his criminal charges have nothing to do with his ability as a vet."

Mr Kirk added: "I have many plans and ambitions for my future, but I am 100 percent sure I will win this appeal."
