South Wales flash flooding warning for Thursday

THE public are being warned of flash flooding, as the heatwave looks set to trigger heavy downpours in South Wales and South West England on Thursday (July 2).

The Environment Agency and Met Office are warning homeowners, businesses and drivers in South Wales and South West England that heavy, thundery rain could lead to flash flooding, particularly from surface water drains and small watercourses.

Over the next 24 hours, localised torrential downpours are forecast for South Wales, Devon and Cornwall.

There is a chance of some surface water flooding, and a smaller chance of river flooding in these areas.

During the early hours of Thursday morning, storms will occur in Cornwall and then track north into Wales and east across Devon into Somerset and Dorset during daylight hours on Thursday.

The Environment Agency and Met Office are advising homeowners in the affected regions to monitor weather forecasts and warnings on the Met Office website (www.metoffice.gov.uk) and keep an eye on the Environment Agency’s website (www.environment-agency.gov.uk) to check whether any flood warnings for rivers are issued in the next 24 hours.

The Environment Agency is also urging those who are not registered for its free river and sea flood warning service to sign up by visiting www.environment-agency.gov.uk
