BARRY residents reserved a festive cheer last week for our Olympic swimming hero who braved the chill to get the town in the Christmas mood.

Twenty-three-year-old Olympic bronze and silver medallist and Commonwealth Games champion David Davies – who this year was granted the Freedom of the Town – counted the seconds down until the King Square lights were officially switched on.

The Vale Council-organised event saw turns from the Keith Little Jazz Band, performers from the Vibe, and tribute band Abba Magic before the entertainment was wrapped up for the night.

Vale Council events officer Sarah Jones said they wanted to thank David Davies for travelling from Loughborough to attend.

She added: "We were really pleased with the event and would like to thank everyone for turning up and supporting it."
