A FANCY-DRESS fundraising stalwart has smashed his record for charity collections - despite having to dress as Big Ears following a shortage of Noddy costumes.
Undeterred, John Motton, a security officer at the Vale Council's Civic Offices car park, averted trouble in Toyland last week by reverting to the children's favourite's best friend Big Ears to rake in £690.44 cash for the Arthritis Research Campaign (arc).
Rheumatoid arthritis sufferer and author Enid Blyton herself gave arc permission to use Noddy to help raise funds for children with arthritis.
64-year-old granddad John, of Pendine Close, Gibbonsdown, who has previously dressed up as Madonna and Elvis to raise money for charitable causes, said: "I went to get a Noddy outfit and they'd run out.
"All they had left was Big Ears.
"The costume has been a nightmare with the elastic and it's been really warm."
The thrilled Vale Council employee, who achieved the total selling badges and accepting donations, said: "Staff have been absolutely fantastic.
"I cannot believe it."
Regional Appeals Manager for Wales, the West Midlands and Northern Ireland, Fred Johnson said: "I've got to thank John for his amazing costume and I've also got to thank all the staff in the Civic Offices for giving such an amazing amount - considering the car park only holds 150 cars.
"The money will be used for children who suffer from arthritis."
