RESIDENTS across the Vale are being offered the opportunity of winning £500 worth of vouchers of their choice by completing a short questionnaire about recycling habits.

The Vale council survey will take just a few minutes to complete and can be found in the June edition of the authority community newspaper, ValeWaves' or can be completed online.

Copies can be sent out on request.

Head of visible services Miles Punter said the council wanted to hear residents' views and find out how they are using the council's different recycling services.

He added: "Make sure you don't miss the chance to tell us what your household currently does or doesn't do with your recycling and be entered into our prize draw. Surveys need to be received by July 14 to be eligible for the draw."

The overall winner picked at random will be able to choose £500 worth of vouchers of their choice. And there are two fabulous runners-up prizes of Nintendo DS Lites.

Around 35 per cent of household waste In the Vale is currently recycled or composted, and Mr Punter said: "Over the next few years we need to work together to increase this figure to around 60 per cent - a figure set by the Welsh Assembly Government.

"This target may seem ambitious at first glance but it is achievable when you consider other towns/cities worldwide, where communities work together effectively to recycle more than this."

Cabinet member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox said: "For the Vale to be recycling over a third of its waste is good, and I thank all those involved for their concerted efforts. "We now need to learn what might encourage you to do more, continue to improve our service and to work towards achieving our target.

"I would ask everyone to take a few minutes to help us achieve this."

To allow more re-cycling steps must be taken to prevent over-filling of existing facilities. Fly tipping due to lack of capacity or delay between emptying of containers is the inevitable result.
