A BARRY school has marked the end of its' Science Week by becoming the first 'whole-school-community' to litter pick at Porthkerry Park.
All 360 pupils from Romilly Junior School took to the beach, teaming up with school staff and 50 parents to blitz rubbish at the beauty spot on Friday morning (May 3).
The pupils collected 130 bags of waste material amounting to about a tonne and a quarter in weight.
Representatives from Keep Wales Tidy, Waste Awareness and Eco Schools have been working with the pupils on raising awareness of waste and recycling and how it can impact on the environment.
The school's Science Week co-ordinator Liz Durant thanked all the agencies who had helped make the week a success and added: "We found a pair of boxer shorts, some fishing line and lots of plastic.
"All the children were wonderful."
Park ranger Mel Stewart said the children had been the first to trial nature walks on the park's new animal trail, and that she had wanted to involve the school with the park for a long time.
"It will make a massive difference to the state of the beach," she added.
Keep Wales Tidy Eco Schools, Bryony Butcher said: "It's quite a big thing to bring the whole school down, and because they are an Eco School it counts as part of their Eco School project."
