THE Vale of Glamorgan has been granted Fairtrade county status.
Fifteen catering outlets and more than 30 retail outlets now serve and sell Fairtrade goods in the Vale and many businesses have signed a commitment to encourage staff to use Fairtrade tea and coffee.
The items range from the tea, coffee and snack products familiar to many people, to more unique items such as jewellery and clothing.
This week's decision, which follows an application by the Vale council, coincides with a Fairtrade exhibition - running in Fairtrade Fortnight until March 8 - at the Barry Town Hall.
Fairtrade ensures that workers in developing countries are paid a living wage and have decent working conditions and security in their trade.
The result means the whole community benefits, with investment in education and health care Head of visible services Miles Punter said: "Each consumer who buys Fairtrade makes a difference.
"Gaining Fairtrade county status is a real achievement and will make a real difference to people's lives.
"I am really pleased that residents and businesses in the Vale are so supportive of Fairtrade."
Fairtrade products can be enjoyed across the whole of the Vale - stockists can be found on the council website at www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
