THIS week’s From the Archive features a photograph of the members of the Barry and Vale Archaeological Group (BVAG) taken in September 1966.

The members are sat upon the ruined east chancel wall of Uchelolau (Highlight church) which was excavated by Howard J Thomas and Gerald Davies in 1964 with his team of dedicated enthusiasts.

The church site is now a protected monument and is situated within the boundaries of Brynhill golf course.

The group carried out excavation work at Highlight on the church site and its priest house, a medieval corn-drying-kiln, and the site of a 12th century manor house, all of which once formed part of a small village which was abandoned in the middle ages due to famine and the black death.

Mr Thomas’ excavations were the first of its kind to be carried out on a low land site in Wales.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Gareth Tyley for providing this photograph.
