A MAN has died after suffering cardiac arrest during a triathlon event at Barry Island today.

CPR was carried out on the 43-year-old but he was declared dead shortly after.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to assist with a medical emergency at Whitmore Beach, Barry Island, shortly after 7.30am today.

"A 43-year-old man, who was taking part in a triathlon event, is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

"CPR was carried out by colleagues from the ambulance service, lifeguards and the Coastguard, but the man was declared deceased shortly afterwards.

"His next of kin have been informed."
